The RTDS Simulator was originally developed from a research project done at the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre in the 1980s. In 1989, the world’s first real time digital HVDC simulation took place right here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In 1993, the first commercial installation of the RTDS Simulator took place. Then, in 1994, RTDS Technologies Inc. was founded, with the mission of carrying on the development and commercialization of the Simulator.
At RTDS Technologies, we view introducing the world’s very first fully digital real-time power system simulator as just the beginning.
We successfully replaced analogue simulators as the de facto tool for factory acceptance testing of HVDC and FACTS devices worldwide.
We changed the way protective relay testing is performed for the entire industry. The world-class relay manufacturers who use the RTDS Simulator are now able to perform more complex and thorough closed-loop testing, and higher volume batch mode testing, than ever before.
Two decades ago, we provided the world’s first large scale simulator to J-Power / KCC, the largest electric utility in Japan.
We introduced the world’s very first portable real time power system simulator in 1999, enabling our employees, our representatives and our customers to bring real time simulation with them when they travel. The introduction of portable simulation has made real time digital power system simulation a globalized concept.
In 2004, China Southern Grid (CSG) purchased four RTDS Simulator racks. Today, they own and operate the largest real time digital power system simulator in the world, consisting of a whopping 38 racks from RTDS Technologies!
We developed the GTNET and the subsequent GTNETx2 card, which introduced the use of high level protocols, such as IEC 61850, with the RTDS Simulator.
In 2017, we introduced NovaCor, the world’s fastest and most capable real time power system simulator, based on a multicore processor platform, which is fully compatible with previous generation GTWIF-based simulation hardware.
Throughout the last twenty plus years, we have continually increased the scope, accuracy, and flexibility of real time simulations being performed across the globe.
RTDS Technologies is located in the Smartpark Research and Technology Park on the University of Manitoba campus in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The Smartpark’s mandate is to build a community of innovators on the doorstep of the University, and RTDS Technologies is proud to contribute to this vision.
Our state-of-the-art building, shown here, was designed specifically for our company and is built over a retention pond. Our facility houses our entire team of over 50 dedicated employees – administration, research and development, technical support, marketing, and hardware production – under one roof.
